The starting point for this series lies in my experience in 1998 of viewing an exhibition of 14th to 16th Century Russian Icons. These icons had a visual potency which functioned in the absence of knowledge of their symbolic content. It is this potency that became the focus of my interest and its investigation has underpinned my work since then.
Some works reference the process by which the icon is made and the concepts on which the process is based. Others are inspired by observation of how the interaction of light and surface functions in an icon to activate an experience of space.
Issues of luminosity and the structure of space continue to form the basis of my work.
